INFORMATIONAL VIDEO ON ASSESSORS JOB DUTIES

Assesor's Responsibilities:

  • Determine and maintain assessments, property inventory records, ownership, and exemptions on approximately 3670 parcels.
  • Locate all taxable Real Property in our town and identify the ownership of each.
  • Establish a taxable value for all Real Property subject to taxation.
  • List the values of all property on the Assessment Roll.
  • Assist taxpayers with exemption applications and determine their eligibility.

Dates to Remember

  • March 1: Taxable Status Day (exemption filing deadline and status of completion or condition of real property)
  • May 1: Tentative Assessment Roll Filed Annually
  • Grievance Day: The Board of Assessment Review meets and hears all complaints regarding assessments on the 1st Thursday after the 4th Tuesday in May. Meeting Hours: 10am – 12pm and 6pm – 8pm..  addendum #1 at bottom
  • July 1:  Final Assessment Roll Filing and Valuation Date.

Common Exemptions

  • BASIC STaR (School Tax Relief):  Primary residence, no age requirement, income less than $250,000.  – New owners must register with NYSDTF.  Call 518-457-2036 or register online at www.tax.ny.gov. This exemption only pertains to the school tax bill (September) NOT the town and county tax bill (January).

  • ENHANCED STaR (School Tax Relief): Primary residence, 65 years of age or older, income less than $92,000. – New owners must register with NYSDTF.  Call 518-457-2036 or register online at www.tax.ny.gov.  This exemption only pertains to the school tax bill (September) NOT the town and county tax bill (January). If you have received the BASIC STaR exemption in the past and have since turned 65, you may qualify for this larger exemption (contact our office for more information).

  • AGED (Senior): Primary residence, must be 65 years of age or older by March 1st of the application year, income $32,400. or less. Percentage of exemption is based on income on a sliding scale. This exemption MAY pertain to SCHOOL TAX BILL AND/OR THE TOWN AND COUNTY TAX BILL based on income level. New owners who qualify will receive the Credit Check for the Enhanced portion of this exemption. 

  • VETERANS: Primary residence, honorably discharged from a branch of the Armed Forces. Wartime and Cold war period apply. Copy of DD214 (Service record) necessary to process application. PERTAINS TO TOWN AND COUNTY TAX BILL ONLY.

Tax Bills:

School Tax Bill - SEPTEMBER: There are three school districts within the Town of Bolton.  Bolton Central School, Lake George Central School and Warrensburg Central School.  Each school has a designated tax collector who mails out the tax bills in September, collects money and issues receipts. School tax bills are available on-line at:  infortaxonline.com or egov.basgov.com.

Town and County Tax Bill - JANUARYThe Town Clerk’s office in the Town of Bolton mails out the Town and County Bills in January, collects the money and issues receipts.  Town and County tax bills are available on-line at: egov.basgov.com.

Deeds/Surveys:

Deeds: If you are in need of a copy of a deed, please visit the Warren County Clerk’s office website at: warrencountyny.gov

Survey’s:  If a survey of a property has been completed by a licensed surveyor AND that survey was filed at the Warren County Clerk’s office. You can access that by contacting the Warren County Clerk’s office at 518-761-6484.  Please note that Tax Maps are NOT an official survey and should not be used to determine property lines.
